The Office of Family Life Ministries offers a Bereavement Ministry Support Training Course that is currently open for registration. This eight-session program is designed for those who wish to become facilitators for existing parish bereavement support groups or for those who wish to begin a bereavement support ministry at their parish. The course is not limited to those who wish to facilitate a support group, however it can also benefit those who minister to the bereaved. The program serves to increase enthusiasm and education for this ministry. Participants will gain an overview of Loss, Grief & Mourning, and the process of healing and current theories. Basic counseling skills will be taught related to listening and asking questions that facilitate healing. Practical information will be given specific to ministering to the bereaved and starting a parish based support group. Grief in special circumstances and assessing the need for referral will also be discussed. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will become Bereavement Support Group Facilitators for the Archdiocese of Newark. Continuing education credits are also available.
