A Tenebrae Service will be held in St. Anne's Chapel at St. Joseph Church, 178 Elm Street in Biddeford, at 10 p.m. on Holy Thursday. The service will follow the Mass of the Lord's Supper, which will be celebrated in the church at 7 p.m., and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, which will continue in the chapel until 10 p.m.
Tenebrae is a Latin word meaning darkness. The service includes singing of the Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah, along with various psalms and prayers. It further includes an experience of the darkness and confusion, symbolizing the temporary triumph of the Prince of Darkness over the Light of the World, and a loud noise at the service’s conclusion, suggesting the earthquake described in the Passion Narratives. The single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of Christ’s triumph over death and darkness.
